Have You Already Given Up On Your New Year's Resolution?

If you're reading this, there's a good chance that you have already given up on your New Year's resolution. In fact, more than 80% of people give up on their resolutions by the second week of February, a whopping 23% within the first week of the year, and only 9% actually follow through for the entire year! Over 50% of resolutions are all health and fitness related. But why are we throwing in the towel so soon?!

The common reasons for quitting:

  • Losing motivation

  • Being too busy

  • Shift in goals and priorities

If you've already given up on your resolution, or you can feel the fire starting to burn out, let's change that while we still can!

How to reignite the fire within:

  1. Take some time to dig deep and really find your WHY for wanting to change. Don't just say you want to lose weight, WHY do you want to lose weight? Is it to feel confident in a bathing suit? Keep up with your active kids? Add years onto your life? Get off/stay off medication? What is your motivation and why is change necessary? Until you can answer that, you cannot successfully stick to a goal.

  2. Set your long-term goal, but focus on all smaller, attainable goals that will add up to achieving your ultimate goal. For example, if your goal is to lose 50 lbs., let's break it down into 5lb increments. As the saying goes, "There is only one way to eat an elephant: a bite at a time." When you only focus on the large number, it feels way less attainable which is the main reason why we give up. Regardless of your ultimate outcome, break it down into small steps, and remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint.

  3. Find an accountability partner with like-minded goals! Going at it alone can be hard. Find someone you can share your goals with and ask them to help hold you accountable and in return, you will do the same for them. When you get that goal out of your head and into the world, it gives you more motivation to keep going!

  4. Write your goals and mini-goals down and hang them up all over your house and office as a constant reminder of your why and motivation to not give up!

Remember, if you are part of the 80%, you are not alone in this struggle. Giving up doesn't mean you failed, it just means you need to re-adjust your goals and figure out what you truly want because, if it's important to you, you will find a way. If it's not, you'll find an excuse. Let's reignite the fire within and get back to it! Make this the LAST year of being in the 80% and your first year of being in the 9%! You got this!
