The best way to determine if you are working out at the right intensity for your goals is to either use the Talk Test as indicated in the graphic (cheap and easy), or through monitoring your heart rate. For the latter, you can use a wearable heart rate monitor (Garmin, Polar, Suunto, etc.), or even a heart rate app on your smart phone. Also know that many of the hand-grip heart rate sensors on cardio equipment are not accurate, so if you don’t have a wearable HR device, it’s best to just use the talk test.
Review the chart below and after you determine what your goal is for your workout, try to stay within your target zone for most of the workout.
